The summer is quickly approaching! You’ll no doubt be happy to be rid of the chilly weather, and you may have a bit more time to spend outside than you did over the winter months. Just make sure that you protect your delicate skin from that harsh summer sun! Here are 4 things you can do to protect yourself and your skin!
Protecting yourself from the sun
Although skin cancer can develop on areas of the body that never see the sun, exposure to the sun greatly increases your risk of developing this deadly disease. It is estimated that more than 2 people die of skin cancer every hour.
Take care of your skin by:
1. Staying inside from 10 am to 4 pm, when the sun is at its strongest. If you do go outside, protect yourself with sunscreen (of course!), a long sleeve shirt, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat. Your eyes are also susceptible to damage from the sun – make sure you wear sunglasses that block UV rays.
2. Using sunscreen correctly. If you are going to be outside for more than 20 minutes, make sure you apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Use sunscreen even if it is a cloudy day, and don’t forget to reapply it often if you are staying outside.
3. Not sunbathing. You may like the look of a tan, but you may be doing permanent damage to your skin. If you really want to sunbathe, limit your time to no more than 20 minutes per day.
4. Examining your skin once a month for anything that looks suspicious and seeing your doctor right away if something doesn’t look right. This is especially important if you’ve had some bad sunburns in the past, as this increases your risk of getting skin cancer.
Spending lots of time outside during the summer is only natural! But it is important to protect your skin from the sun – to prevent wrinkles, lines, and even more serious (and life threatening) problems.
